Ryanair to Scale Back Services at Dublin & Shannon Airports
(18 June 2009) In protest against the €10 travel tax, Ryanair is planning to scale back services operating from both Dublin and Shannon Airports. One Aircraft is being removed from both Dublin Airport and Shannon Airport for the winter schedule which is operational from October. There will only be 16 aircraft operating from Dublin Airport and 3 from Shannon Airport from October.
The removal of an aircraft from both airports will result in 100 jobs being lost at each airport, adding to the 250 jobs already lost at Ryanair during 2009 when five aircraft were removed from operations.
The cuts will result in the loss of 350,0000 passengers at Dublin Airport and 300,000 passengers at Shannon Airport with 44 flights less per week at Dublin Airport and 36 less per week at Shannon Airport.
Mr O'Leary said the move was a result of the controversial €10 travel tax he has been described as 'crazy, stupid and tourism suicide.' According to O'Leary the travel tax will result in passenger traffic at Dublin Airport declining by 11% for the first five months of 2009. Mr O'Leary has said Ryanair will reverse the cuts to its winter schedule if the Government reverse the tax.
