In Ireland there are two main licenses, a Provisional License and a Full Driving License. A Provisional License is for people learning how to drive in Ireland, while a Full Driving License is for those who have passed their driving test.
Provisional License
Before you apply for a provisional license in Ireland, you must pass a Driver Theory Test which examines your knowledge and understanding of the rules of the road. Once you have passed your Driver Theory Test, you can apply for a provisional license. There are some conditions associated with a Provisional License:
- A provisional license last for 2 years
- You can have a maximum of 3 licenses
- You must do your test before you get your 2nd provisional
- During your first and third provisional, you must have a licensed driver in the car to drive
Full License
To obtain a full license in Ireland, you must pass your driving test after holding a provisional license. Once you pass your driving test, you can apply for a full driving license for the category of vehicle you did your test for, in most cases for a car.
