Dublin Airport Facts & Figures
In 2006, Dublin Airport served more than 21 million passengers, making it the 14th busiest airport in Europe and 17th busiest in the world by passenger numbers. In June 2006, passenger numbers passed the two million mark for the first time in a single month and this was repeated in July, August, and September of the same year
When it was first built in 1940, it served just one destination and could handle just 60,000 passengers a year. In this article, we look at some other facts and figures about Dublin Airport. Over 90 airlines operate out of Dublin Airport. The biggest are Ryanair, Aer Lingus and British Midlands. Others include Aer Arann, Futura, Lufthansa and SAS.
Of the 170 plus destinations that Dublin Airport serves, London is by far the most popular with 4.5 million passengers per year. Other popular destinations among Dublin Airport passengers include Manchester, New York, Paris, Birmingham, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
Dublin Airport’s scheduled destinations are served by 44 airlines. In all, Dublin Airport is responsible for the employment of around 13,000 people in 120 different companies. This is a far cry from the original airport of 1940, and Dublin Airport is now set for another major expansion with the construction of a second terminal, T2.
The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) recently received the go ahead for the major project from the planning authorities. The construction of T2 and the new runway are part of the DAAs €2 billion “Transforming Dublin Airport” program. Construction of the new terminal will be completed towards the end of 2007. Following a rigorous testing and commissioning phase, T2 will open in April 2010.
The new terminal and pier will facilitate the provision of significant additional long haul routes linking Dublin with North America, the Middle East and Asia.
