Dublin Airport is the busiest airport in Ireland by a long way. The airport is operated by the Dublin Airport Authority plc. In 2005 over 21million passengers travelled through the airport in 2005. Dublin Airport is the 5th fastest growing airport in Europe and the 66th busiest airport in the world today. The airport has enjoyed year on year passenger growth for over 20 years.

Dublin Airport hosted its first flight on January 19 1940 when the inaugural flight took place to Liverpool which was serviced by Aer Lingus. The main terminal building opened in 1941 and its designed a bridge of a ship and even today this building is one of beauty. Times were good for Dublin Airport and the Airport grew until by 1969 1,737151 passengers had passed through the airport. Since the early 1990s the airport has gone through a boom as the celtic tiger and economy air travel boosted numbers massively.

The airport has 22,000 car parking spaces, has 73 aircraft stands, has 186,000 aircraft movement each year and 88 airlines serve the airport and caters for 150 destinations.

While Dublin Airport continued to expand as the passenger numbers continued to rise until the 1980s when development stagnated although numbers increased. Although some alterations have been made to the airport in recent times, these are more of a stop gap than a long term solution. The government have at last woken up to the fact that vast improvements need to be made at Dublin Airport to cater for the vast amounts of people travelling through the airport each day.
