Ennis: An Introduction

Situated on the River Fergus in Co Clare, Ennis sits mid way between Galway and Limerick along the N18 road recently a bypass of Ennis has been completed which makes any drive from Limerick to Galway or vice versa much easier. Ennis has a population of over 24,000 people which makes it the sixth largest town in Ireland.

Ennis evolved around a Franciscan friary that was built in 1242 and remained an important religious center until the Dissolution of the Monasteries when Henry VIII confiscated all monastic properties in Ireland. Since then Ennis has grown into an important market town, a role it still fulfills today when stalls are erected in the market square.

In terms of a holiday destination, Ennis has much to offer. The town is a collection of narrow wandering streets lined with shops and restaurants. Abbey Street is the main shopping street in Ennis but also boasts a great selection of Pubs and restaurants such as Knox's Bar & Bistro.

Shannon Airport is situated only 20 minutes away from Ennis, and a large proportion of the people working in Ennis are employed either directly or indirectly by Shannon Airport and surrounding industries. If you are renting a car from Shannon Airport, Ennis is only a short distance away and is connected by quality roads.
