Heritage Centers of Ireland
To simply say that Ireland has a bit of history to offer is much like saying that swimming in the ocean may get you a little damp! Ireland’s whole culture reflects its past, and the Irish are very aware and proud of where they come from. Although its cities may be as up to date as you could wish, the spirit of Ireland is that of a country that is millennia old, and you should have no trouble finding a site to assuage your desire to get in closer touch with that history.
Castles are certainly terribly glamorous, and they conjure up romantic images of knights-errant, ladies in towers and all the other standard elements of a chivalric tale. Real life in a castle, of course, was very difficult, and most reasonably comprehensive museum displays will attempt top communicate this to the visitors. Many of Ireland’s castles feature somewhat interactive displays, and are a great choice of venue for all sorts of travellers, as there is something to interest the adults as well as enough space to really let the kids run wild!
If it’s slightly more modern history you seek, Ireland also offers many stately old manor homes. These are usually found fairly close to cities, and even some of those that are inhabited may be open for tours on certain dates. Houses once occupied by important government persons are often of interest to adults, though children may find things a bit dull; still, they can be a great way to spend the day if rain or other inclement weather happens to alter your plans.
Whether you’re looking to connect with Medieval Ireland by exploring her castles and ruins, or possibly wanting to explore a bit of Georgian or Victorian Dublin by touring one of the many fine homes open to the public, you can be sure that you won’t run out of options in a hurry! One of the best ways to explore Ireland and her history is by renting a car and touring from location to location.
