Kinsale: An Introduction
Situated on the south coast of Country Cork and 25 kilometres south of Cork City, Kinsale is a town that has always been a popular tourist destination for both Irish and international visitors. Kinsale if famous for its food and restaurants, golf courses and the character of the town as it rises from the sea.
Kinsale was the site of a battle in 1601 when English forces defeated a combined force of both Irish and Spanish soldiers (Siege of Kinsale). Following the outcome of this battle the ‘flight of the Earls’ took place which saw many of the aristocracy flee Ireland in fear of their lives. After this event the area became an English stronghold and this is reflected in the architecture of the town which is distinctly Georgian.
RMS Lusitania sunk off the coast of Cork in 1915 after departing New York on May 1. There was significant U-boat activity in the area and although technically a passenger ship should be safe against a U-boat, the Germans believed the British were using passenger liners to transport weapons for the war effort. The ship was sunk 20 kilometres off the coast of Cork at 1410 when the ship crossed the path of U-20. 1,198 people died or which 128 American citizens. The death of Americans eventually resulted in America getting involved in the war against Germany.
This little town is a treasure in Ireland, and if you have the opportunity to visit, there is a lot on offer from top quality restaurants to fascinating history. The Kinsale Yacht Club is the oldest Yacht Club in the world.
