Limerick: An Introduction
Situated in the West of Ireland and on the banks of the River Shannon, Limerick is a city steeped in history and character. Today Limerick is one of the most important economic centers in the province of Munster and is home to over 50,000 people making it the fourth largest city in Ireland after Dublin, Belfast and Cork.
The city dates back to 812AD when the area was settled by Vikings. During the 12th Century Normans had taken control of the city. It was during this period that many of the signature buildings associated with Limerick were added. During the 17th Century Oliver Cromwell besieged the city while during the 19th Century the city became rich under the Act of Union.
Sport in Limerick is more a way of life than a pass time with Rugby Union being the most popular sport in the city at all levels. Munster participate in both the Magners League and the Heineken Cup tournament with all of their home games being played at Thomand Park. Among the other sports popular in Limerick are GAA, soccer and rowing with many of Ireland's top rowers originating from Limerick.
Limerick is a fantastic tourist destination and is only a 15minute drive from Shannon Airport. Limerick has excellent shopping, eating and public transport facilities. Among the main tourist attractions in Limerick are King John's Castle, The Hunt Museum, St Mary's Cathedral, Downtown Georgian Limerick, Thomand Park and the Limerick City Gallery of Art.
