Dublin's Museums and Galleries
Dublin is a city that is steeped in history and culture so it is not surprising that it has a number of excellent museums and galleries for you to visit. Luckily, most of the best museums are located in a small area in the south inner city. We look at some of the museums and galleries that you can not afford to miss.
The National Museum
Ireland’s National Museum has provided a priceless look at the history of Ireland since it first opened in 1890. It traces Ireland’s history as far back as 7,500 BC. It covers prehistoric Ireland, Viking Ireland and medieval Ireland as well as more modern times. In Or – Ireland’s Gold, it has one of the finest exhibitions of golden artifacts in Europe. Admission is free.
The Natural History Museum
Opened in 1857, the Natural History Museum on Merrion Square is one of the oldest museums in the country. Walk through its doors and look upwards and you will see the skeletons of a fin whale and a humpback whale suspended from the ceiling. Both were found off the Irish coast in the 18th century. As you explore its various levels you will find everything from bottled leeches to majestic Irish elks. Admission is free and this is an experience not to be missed.
National Gallery of Ireland
The National Gallery was opened to the public in 1864. Here you can view 2,500 paintings and about 10,000 other displays. As well as works from all over Europe, Ireland’s most famous painters are represented here. Admission to the permanent collection is free.
All of these treasures lie conveniently close together and provide an excellent taste of what Dublin’s museums and galleries have to offer. However, there are scores more in the capital for you to explore covering everything from the city’s literary history to Ireland’s maritime tradition.
