Penalty Points in Ireland - Driving in Ireland

The Penalty Point System and fixed fines for drivers was introduced in October 2002 Under the Road Traffic Act 2002 to target motorists guilty of driving offences. Penalty Points remain on a license for three years and act as a formal reprimand by the Gardai for motoring offences.

Penalty points are aimed at reducing the unnecessary road deaths in Ireland, initially by tackling speed and safety related offences. The penalty points were updated in 2006 to cover a much broader range of motoring offences.
