Port Tunnel Tolls to Halve at Weekends
During July 2007, the National Roads Authority (NRA) decided to halve weekend tolls at the Dublin Port Tunnel to €3 after a review of HGV traffic through the tunnels at weekends showed reduced levels.
During week days, 13,000 vehicles use the tunnel, a figure that drops to 4,800 vehicles on Saturday and to only 4,000 on Sundays.
The new pricing plan will mean that cars will pay only €3 to use the toll from 2200 on Fridays until 0600 on Mondays.
A date for the introduction of this toll has not yet been decided upon, but will depend on when the upgrade works at the M50 are completed.
Currently a toll plaza operates on the Dublin Port Tunnel from the Dublin Port or southern end. This plaza is operated by Transtoute who collect the tolls on behalf of the Department of Transport.
There are three toll payment methods, cashier, coin machines and Electronic Toll. It is important to turn on dipped headlights and remove sun glasses before entering the Port Tunnel. The tunnel is not accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and learner drivers.
