Activities in The North West Region of Ireland

If you love the great outdoors, then you will feel right at home in the north-west of Ireland. Whether you want to explore the depths of the region's many bays or climb to the highest peaks, you will find no shortage of activities in the region.
Two of the region's most popular activities, golf and fishing, we have covered in more detail in separate articles, but there are many more.
The north-west of Ireland has long been a Mecca for hiking enthusiasts. Whether you want a strenuous week-long hike along the Donegal coast or a relaxing half-day stroll along one of the many woodland trails, you will find something to suit you. The biggest task will be choosing from the huge choice of beautiful walking trails in the area. Water sports are also a big draw in the area. Ireland is not commonly known as a big surfing destination but the quality of the waves off the beaches of Sligo and Donegal attract surfers from all around the world each year. Strandhill beach in Sligo is host to the Irish Surfing Championships and there are excellent surfing beaches all along the coast for both beginners and experts. Sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and diving are also popular water sports in the area.
Sport is like a religion in Ireland and it is no different in the north-west. Throughout the year you will find local and national sporting events all across the country. Check out the traditional Irish sports of Gaelic football or hurling, or sample a day of horse racing, the sport of kings, to get a true glimpse of the Irish spirit.
And that is just a taste of the many activities the north-west has to offer. You could try your hand at mountain biking, go canoeing on the lakes of Cavan, spend a day horse riding or even go parachuting. The choice is endless.
