Car Hire in The North West Region of Ireland

By far the best way to explore the north-west of Ireland is by
car. No other means of transport allows the freedom to see all of the
best sights at your own convenience. And while many visitors bring
their own cars from abroad, for others car hire is the only option.
Thankfully, hiring a car in Ireland is cheap and convenient. If you are flying in from abroad you will find a choice of car hire agencies at all the international airports such as Dublin Airport and Shannon Airport. You will also find car rentals at the north-west's regional airports - City of Derry Airport, Sligo Airport and Donegal Airport – and all the major cities and towns.
In general, the range and quality of cars on offer is excellent. Cars are usually less than six months old and you should be able to choose from compact cars, family cars, saloons, MPVs and even SUVs. You can even hire small vans if you are traveling with a group.
Car hire in Ireland is very reasonable but you will get a much better deal if you book in advance and hire the vehicle for a week or more, though expect to pay more in high season. Good insurance is essential so be sure to check if this is included in the price. In general, all rental prices should include VAT, Collision Damage Waiver Insurance, Theft Protection Insurance and unlimited mileage.
To rent a car in Ireland you will require a full driving license from your own country and you should also have a credit card.
Once you rent your car, you will find the north-west easy to get to and easy to navigate. The region is within a three-hour drive of Dublin and Shannon airports. For advice on driving in the north-west region please see our driving guide.
