Dining in The North West Region of Ireland

When you are traveling in the
north-west of Ireland you will find a fine range of restaurants and
eateries to suit every taste and every budget. Whereas a couple of
decades ago Irish food was limited to more local fare, you can now
sample cuisines from all around the globe. Of course, if you prefer,
all the popular local dishes are still available. Victoria Hall in Carrick on Shannon offers a fantastic mixture of both local cuisine and Thai food.
The one thing that you can not afford to miss when eating out in the north-west is the seafood. The region's location right on the Atlantic Ocean means that the fish, lobster and shrimp could not be fresher. A plate of mussels or oysters with a pint of Guinness always goes down well, while the local rivers and lakes serve up delicious wild salmon and trout. So if you like seafood and fish, you won't be disappointed.
If you are traveling in the north-west you will find that all hotels and a lot of guesthouses serve food. All will provide breakfast, while many will serve lunch and dinner. Alternatively, you can also eat in cafés, which are usually good for lunch and light snacks, and restaurants, which are more suitable for evening meals. You will also find plenty of fast food options serving up traditional fish and chips, pizza and the like.
You will find quality restaurants everywhere you go in the north-west, but the Restaurant Association of Ireland and Find a Restaurant will give you a good idea of what is available in any particular area. For the most part, you will find that many of the better restaurants are concentrated in the bigger towns. However, you do find some hidden gems in the countryside too so keep an open mind.
The food on offer depends very much on where you eat. Most of the hotels offer basic meat and fish dishes and some traditional fare such as Irish stew. Many restaurants offer continental style cooking while you will also find plenty of Italian, Mexican, Indian and Chinese restaurants in the region.
