County Donegal - The North West Region of Ireland

Situated in the north-west corner of Ireland, Donegal is arguably the most beautiful county in the region. Its rugged Atlantic coastline provides some of the best scenery in the country, as well as great attractions, bustling towns and a rich culture that all the family will enjoy.

Many people visit Donegal for its amazing scenery and great golf courses, but the landscape and coastline are also tailor-made for other outdoor pursuits like surfing, hiking and climbing. This northern county is also a great place to soak up some Irish culture, with traditional music to be found everywhere you go.

Donegal has a number of major towns, including Donegal Town, Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Buncrana and Lifford. Each town has its own character and attractions. Donegal Town and Bundoran are two of the major tourist centers in the county and have excellent accommodation, dining and entertainment to offer the visitor. Throughout the year, the towns and villages of Donegal are host to some of the best festivals in the country, such as the Earagail Arts Festival and Ballyshannon Music Festival – which is an excellent opportunity to check out the pubs of Ballyshannon.

However, much of Donegal's charm lies in its more remote and rural areas. Fanad Peninsula, Inishowen Peninsula and The Rosses have miles and miles of unspoilt coastline, amazing beaches and are truly off the beaten track. Head into the Irish Gaeltacht with a visit to Gweedore or Dungloe. If you are looking to trace your Irish roots or want a greater insight into the history and the heritage of Donegal, the East Donegal Ulster-Scots Association may be a good place to start.

Though Donegal is remote by Irish standards, it is still easy to get to. By car, Donegal is no more than a four hour drive from either Dublin or Shannon Airports. Alternatively, you can get a connecting flight from Dublin to Donegal Airport or nearby Sligo Airport or Derry City Airport. Regular buses also travel to Donegal from Dublin and major towns in the region. Car is the best way to get around Donegal and see all the sights but bus, and even bike, are also viable options.
