Driving in The North West Region of Ireland
The best way to see Ireland's stunning north-west region is by car. No other means of transport gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore all of the region's treasures at a pace that suits you. However, driving in a new country is always a bit of a challenge, so if you are traveling from abroad there are a few things you need to know. Here are a few tips to help you drive safely in Ireland's north-west.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember in Ireland is that, unlike the United States and continental Europe, cars drive on the left. This can take some getting used to, especially if you have a rental car, so take it slowly and try to keep to quieter roads at first.
Also be aware of speed limits. The speed limit on motorways is 120km/hr, 100km/hr on national roads, 80km/hr on secondary roads and 50/60km/hr in towns and cities. These, however, can vary so keep an eye on road signs. In addition, if you are towing a caravan you can not go faster than 80km/hr.
When driving in the north-west, and indeed all of the Republic of Ireland, you will need a valid driving license from your own country. It is also a good idea to have an International Drivers Permit. You will also require your vehicle registration document or rental documents and proof of insurance.
Seat belts must be worn at all times front and back, and children under 12 are not permitted to sit in the front of the vehicles. Most of the Irish road laws are the same as in other countries. Drinking and driving is, of course, forbidden, as is using a mobile phone while driving.
You should also bear in mind that Donegal, Leitrim, Cavan and Monaghan all border Northern Ireland. Once you cross the border you are driving in a different country with entirely different road laws. So be sure to familiarise yourself with these rules before you cross the border.
For the most part, driving in the north-west of Ireland is easy. Journey times are short and the road network has improved vastly in recent years, so driving is a great way to get around.
