Fishing in The North West Region of Ireland

Fishing in the North West

From sea fishing off the coast of Donegal to salmon fishing on the beautiful lakes of Cavan, the north-west of Ireland offers some of the best fishing to be found anywhere in Europe.

With its unspoilt waterways and well managed fishing spots, Ireland's lakes and rivers are still abundant with all kinds of fish life. For angling, the north-west of Ireland contains both the Shannon and Erne river systems. These rivers, their tributaries and the many lakes in the area provide some of the best angling in the country. Areas such as Cootehill in Cavan and Glencar Lough in Sligo are particularly popular for fishing holidays to Ireland.

Some of the best salmon fishing in the area can be found in nearby Leitrim. For example, Drowes Salmon Fishery in Kinlough provides everything required for a fishing holiday to the north-west, including five miles of river, bait, licenses, accommodation and even a fishing school.

The region is dotted with lakes so virtually everywhere you go you will find great places to fish. You can easily hop in the car and explore the region by yourself. Alternatively, there are plenty of fishing tour operators in the area, such as Gerry Duffy Angling, that will take you to all the best fishing spots, and even provide accommodation, food and equipment.

The north-west of Ireland is also a popular spot with sea anglers. The region has over 400 miles of coastline where you can easily fish from the rocks and beaches. It is also a good area for deep sea fishing, with plenty of boats for hire and the 50 fathom line just a short distance off from most ports.

Of course, you will need to be aware of when and can and can not fish in Ireland before you plan you trip. To help you plan your holiday, full information on fishing in the region is available from the Central Fisheries Board and North-west Fisheries.
