Golf in The North West Region of Ireland

Golf in the North West Region of Ireland

From challenging links to lush parkland courses, Ireland's north-west offers some of the best golf in the country – and that's saying something. Ireland's golf boom in the past couple of decades has seen a number of excellent additions to its already impressive choice of courses. The breathtaking coastal regions of Sligo and Donegal offer the best in links golf, while Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan are home to some fine inland courses.

Ireland's golf courses are regarded as among the best in Europe, if not the world, and thousands of visitors flock here every year just to enjoy the golf. For a serious golfer, there is little to compare to the challenge of taking on one of the unforgiving links courses dotted along the Atlantic coast of the north-west of Ireland.

Make no mistake, these are some of Ireland's finest courses. Enniscrone and Co Sligo, home to the Golfing Union of Ireland's West of Ireland Championship, are a real treat, but be prepared for a stern test of your skills. A short distance from Sligo, you will find Rosses Point Golf Club, a beautiful links course on the Atlantic Coast. These are just a small taste of the many excellent golfing opportunities in the region.

A golfing trip to the north-west is simple to arrange. Getting there from either Dublin or Shannon airports takes only a couple of hours, so you can easily pack up your clubs and tour the courses of the region at your leisure. There are also a number of local airports in the region. Alternatively, there are plenty of Irish Tourist Board Approved agencies that offers customised golf tours for every taste and every skill level and will arrange everything for you.

By international standards green fees in Ireland are cheap with many fine 18-hole courses offering a round of golf for less than €30, though you can expect to pay a good deal more than that for the really popular courses. Even so, they still represent good value for money.

With its breathtaking scenery and carefully tended championship courses, a golfing trip to the north-west of Ireland is an experience not to be missed by any golfer.
