County Leitrim - The North West Region of Ireland
Of the counties that make up the north-west region of Ireland, Leitrim is the least known. However, that is not to say it is not worth visiting. In fact, if you want to get off the beaten path and discover something new, this is the place to go.
Another hidden gem in Ireland's north-west, Leitrim is truly at the heart of the Lake District. With two of Ireland's largest rivers, the Shannon and the Erne, it is home to some of Ireland's most beautiful lakes and waterways. Not surprisingly, the fishing is second to none.
The largest town in the county is Carrick-on-Shannon, a picturesque community on the banks of the River Shannon. Relaxed and unspoilt, this small town has a lively scene and some great pubs and is a good base from which to explore the county. Drumshanbo and Manorhamilton are two of the other main towns in the county.
With so many lakes and waterways, it is not surprising that many of the best activities in Leitrim involve the water. It is renowned for fishing and is also a popular spot for kayaking, sailing, cruising and water skiing. The county is also criss-crossed with excellent walking and cycling trails, and there are some fine golf courses too.
Accommodation in Leitrim is of high quality and is keenly priced. If you decide to base yourself in Carrick-on-Shannon you could do far worse than the Bush Hotel, a 200-year-old establishment providing modern rooms and good facilities.
If, however, you would prefer to get out into the country then Caldra House, just outside the town, provides charming lodgings in a Georgian home. Or, if you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you could spend a night or two at Lough Rynn Castle, one of Ireland's most beautiful and well-appointed castle hotels. If you would prefer the self-catering option, then Spencer Harbour holiday home is well worth a look.
Leitrim is located in the heart of the north-west region, just a short drive from Cavan, Monaghan, Sligo or Donegal. It is a comfortable three-hour drive from Dublin and within four hours of Shannon Airport. There are also regular bus and rail services between Carrick-on-Shannon and Dublin.
